I hope you know by now that I am not one to build workbenches. As a result, I will leave this question to those with a LOT of expertise, as this will be a critical part of your shop.
Note to my readers: I prefer to tell it straight, rather than make up something that is very likely to be wrong. In a separate e-mail I wrote to amish:

P.S.: The *only* workbench I have ever built was about 15 years ago, using 2 X 4s; it required only nails and screws.
