Preserving wood, a yearly task

Ready. Set…

Time to get ready for Summer, as the temperatures have already hit over 90°F in NW Missouri — it means it is time to re-seal the new deck. I have done it in the past using an applicator pad. Forget it, as it is terribly messy! I still have huge spots on the pool filter to show, from sealing the old deck about 5 years ago, using the gooey stuff.

I learned last year that spraying the sealer is a great way to do it quickly, and well enough to last the full season. The main drawback: spraying means using an oil-based sealer, as this kind is generally thin enough to spray. Forget about claims that the sealer will last three or more years; usually, a sealer that lasts that long falls in the opaque types. They are more like applying paint to your bedroom walls. For a deck I want a sealer that lets me see the grain in the cedar. So, oil it was, applied with a spray system:

Resealing, and preserving the new deck.

Resealing, and preserving the new deck.

I am ready for Summer. Well, not quite, as I must still spray the lower deck area, and also all the “outer” surfaces. I am dreading this, because it means <…gasp…> being on a ladder for several hours. My calves are already feeling the pain.

OK. Someone must do it. I am tough. I think…
