A vintage saw vise and a new hand saw file

vintage-saw-vise_tonemapped
I could not help myself: I have this vintage saw vise with the file attachment. However, I am using the Veritas hand saw file holder – this makes for a great combination!

I must learn the secrets of hand saw sharpening — rake, fleam, etc. The vise feels solid; it grabs the saw plate evenly. I will be busy.

    Hi Al
It’s great to see you sharpening your own saws. This is a great lesson in patience and discipline. I have been doing my own since a teenager. The hardest thing to learn is a consistent file stroke so the teeth on the left side are the same as the right side.

You are right, Dave. I learned the hard way, with the first few teeth I touched. Then it got better.

I hope to become very good at sharpening, though, to the point I look forward to it!

    Way to go Al!!!

Say goodbye to waiting for someone else to sharpen your saws.

Thanks, Bob! That is the single biggest reason to learn. I am getting the hang of it.
