Onlays for the altar

Following some research into symbols required for the latest project, I worked on the following. Now they are ready to receive the finish:

The symbols, to be used as onlays on raised panels.

After (carefully) cutting out the shapes on the scroll saw, and some sanding to remove the blade marks, I used the Proxxon mini-router to round over the edges:

The tools used in final shaping.

Then the serious sanding started. But the results were worth the time, as my client was pleased with the results. The size was perfect (Chi-Rho is 7 inches tall), and shaping, although very simple is pleasing.

Do these qualities come through in the images? I look forward to your comments.

From computer model, to the shop

For now, all I have is this teaser. My client saw the work-in-progress today, and was ecstatic. What more could one ask for? We should be able to deliver it about mid-week, next week. In the meantime, this is all I can share today — a computer rendition, from the eCabinet Systems software (Thermwood Corporation) I use to prepare renditions for clients:

For this project I partnered with Dan, owner of one of the largest local cabinet shops. There was no way I could handle this one in my shop, especially application of the finish. Dimensions: 72 inches wide, 30 inches deep, and 40 inches tall. One small box will be located between the two shorter boxes now seen on the top. The question is: what is it?

I promise photos of the final item, in its proper location.

A little SketchUp, please

As I mentioned last week, I received a copy of the new e-Book by Bob Lang, Woodworkers Guide to SketchUp. Over the weekend I spent a little time learning some things beyond the basics of the program, and also reviewing (again!) most of the basics. The following is the result; although the model requires  refining, it is a complete model at this point (at least, in my mind…):

Is this a project that can be built? I don’t know — but I will try. The following was the starting point; I drew a sketch on the proverbial napkin, as I did not have my sketch book:

The concept sketch.

Thanks, Bob, for sending me a pre-production copy of your new book. It was wonderful to have the e-Book open on one monitor, and work on the model on the other monitor!
