The Prie Dieu (Prayer Bench/Kneeler) project

This is the project, one day prior to crating and shipping to my client (Gran) in North Carolina:

Prie Dieu for Gran, in North Carolina

After reading my prayer bench/kneeler blog post, and watching the videos I produced, Gran contacted me and was interested in having one of these specific models, in walnut. I requested details to custom-fit the kneeler, and scheduled the build.

During the entire build I kept my client informed of progress with one photo album I created in my Photo Gallery. This proved to be a great way to keep Gran informed.

Upon completion I crated the kneeler, and shipped it to North Carolina. For several days I worried. It arrived intact; all my worrying had been for naught.

Gran’s comments in a recent e-mail were as follows:

I am thrilled to have it – I have wanted one for a long time.  The wood is beautiful and your craftsmanship is a gift.

Thank-you, Gran, for your patience and comments!

The finished prayer kneeler – The photos

Some time ago I posted three videos on the design and build of a prayer kneeler. We donated the kneeler to the local church where our daughter is a parishioner, to help raise funds for their little school in a Silent Auction.

Due to last-minute events, I completely forgot to document the finished piece, as I delivered it to the fund raiser committee just days before the auction. But, as luck would have it, the highest bidder lives less than 10 minutes away from us. Since the lady is a friend of our daughter, I requested she let the winner know I was interested in taking photos of the finished piece, in her own home. She graciously agreed!

So, finally, I can share with you the prayer kneeler in its final location. We purchased the fabric for the kneeling pad during one of treks through the Far East; Sandy made the pad in such a way that, if need be, it could be easily detached and replaced by the lucky high bidder at the Silent Auction. This was not required, as the lady loved it:

Episode 27. The prayer kneeler – Part 2: Construction tips

In this episode I share some of the machining I did on the kneeler. In particular, I provide tips to allow you get better results from your project builds:

  1. How to get perfectly even spacing of the the folding legs within the upright legs.
  2. My preference of using a jig saw to cut the boards a little oversize.
  3. Using a cut list for your project.
  4. Matching grain during edge glue-ups, for best project appearance.
  5. Adjusting the router table fence to the router bit using a straight edge.
  6. Always dry-fit the project before any additional machining requiring free-hand routing, or routing assisted with an edge guide.
  7. Edge-gluing boards:
  • Pre-set the boards on the clamps
  • Line up the boards for best grain match, using a carpenter’s triangle
  • Tightening the clamps: Light pressure at first, always checking the edges for proper alignment, tighten some more, and repeat

If you have any comments about these tips, or would like to have additional explanation, please either 1) Post a Comment right here on the blog, or 2) Send me an e-mail at sandal_woods@bbwi.net . I will reply to you, using my best resources. Thanks!
