From the General Menu for the conference:

Woodworking in America Events provide in-depth explorations of subjects important to woodworkers and are brought to you by the most trusted name in woodworking information— Popular Woodworking Magazine. Presented by leading experts in the fields of woodworking, tools and furniture, our Conference sessions are useful and informative (and also a ton of fun!) for woodworkers of all skill levels and interests. In addition, our Marketplace area lets you try out the newest woodworking tools, talk to their makers and find the right equipment for your workshop.

I have attended all previous WIA conferences (links to videos I shot and edited on the main menu, above). The previous conferences focused mainly on hand tools; this year’s conference will be unique, because if offers a blend of power tools and hand tools. I believe you will enjoy attending, and getting hands-on instruction from well-known experts.

Lie-Nielsen event in Kansas City

I had a chance to attend the Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event, hosted by the Kansas City Woodworkers (KCWW) Guild on March 26 and 27. I arrived early Friday afternoon, shortly after opening time. The parking lot was already quite crowded, and inside was just as crowded. I took this opportunity to shoot a short video, and edited only the parts in which I tilted the camera when I should have turned it off — I left the rest unedited, to give you a good feel for the activities:

The Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event – Kansas City
Duration: 16:42 minutes

This Event, no matter where it is held, is always a great opportunity to learn about hand tools. I saw several friends, and moved about recording the happenings to give you a flavor of the happenings. Deneb was quite busy, as usual, demonstrating hand planes, and just about any tool that visitors were interested in using or (eventually) purchasing. Larry, a friend of mine and colleague in our St Joseph Woodworkers Guild, tried the inlay tool set and loved it (I hope he bought it, as I would love to see some inlay work in his wonderful boxes!)

Bob Zajicek, Owner of The Czeck Edge, stayed quite busy demonstrating his layout tools, as he usually does at the shows he attends. He had on hand a great selection of his signature marking knives, burnishers, rule stops, awls, and his new line of dovetail chisels.

A wonderful surprise awaited visitors to this event. Harry “Jr.” Strasil, one of the KCWW Guild members, had his 1800s traveling hand tool shop set up and running for the entire afternoon. The video shows Jr. working away in his shop – check out the narrow workbench, with a huge array of workholding capabilities, including a leg vise on one end, dog holes galore, both on the bench top and on the back side.

At 6:50 minutes you will see Bill Johnston, the Guild’s Communications Director, showing a young boy the proper use of a hand plane. Bill runs a program to teach parents how to work with children to teach them the proper use of tools in the shop!

A nice bonus: The Kansas City Woodworkers Guild is housed in a 7,500 square foot facility, with ample room for this type of event and huge crowds. I hope the crowd was even larger on Saturday — but the rain might have been a factor. I am sorry I did not attend on Saturday, as an important commitment to my oldest granddaughter kept me away.

The Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool event in Kansas City in less than 2 weeks!

Disclaimer: I do not have any connection with Lie-Nielsen.

As always, click on the images to enlarge them.

The first of the Events in the Midwest in 2010, the Lie-Nielsen (LN) Hand Tool Event will take place in Kansas City in less than two weeks! The Kansas City Woodworkers Guild will host the Event at their facility in Merriam, Kansas. You can view the brochure for this event by clicking on this link. This is a wonderful learning opportunity – I have always learned something new at every one of the Events I have attended. And that makes it a lot of shavings!

Cost: Attendance is FREE!

What: The Lie-Nielsen Toolworks Hand Tool Event

Where: Hosted by the Kansas City Woodworkers Guild in Merriam, KS

When: March 26 and 27, 2010

Time: Friday, March 26, Noon to 6 PM; Saturday, March 27, 10 AM to 5 PM

Why would you want to attend?

  • A great opportunity to “…learn how great tools make your woodworking easier!…”
  • Do you need new tools, and want to try your hand with any and all of the Lie-Nielsen tools? Just about every tool made by the company will be available for you to try.
  • You get to meet, and ask questions from the people at Lie-Nielsen, first-hand.
  • You will have a terrific chance to get advice from experts, whether on the use of a hand plane, a chisel, sharpening, etc. – literally, any of their tools.
  • Lie-Nielsen will not be present at any of the Woodworking Shows this year; as a result, this is a great venue to see them in person.

I encourage you to mark your calendar, and to attend this Event. Sandy and I were fortunate to be able to attend the LN Event in Cincinnati, Ohio, in May 2009. It took place at the Popular Woodworking offices. Other articles in which I mention Lie-Nielsen can be found at this link.

I hope to see you there!
