In his blog, George has *just* started something new in the post Design Critique. He stated:

…This post kicks off something I hope can become a regular feature on this blog. An open design critique where you can submit your work, finished or in progress. As a group of furniture builders we get the honor of [...]

@ Al, I do follow the PW crew. Chris is my hero next to St. Roy. ;-) Bob is supposed to be a wiz on the SketchUp and I have his book. I haven’t decided on the training download/CD but I’m leaning toward it. George Walkers site is amazing and his insight, while a bit flowery, is spot on. You know those artistic bunch can ramble on and on about anything instead of just saying…oooh pretty! Just kidding George!

Good for you – the PWM is a great bunch. I attended Bob’s sessions on SketchUp at the Woodworking in America (WIA) conference in St Charles. I will likely end up getting something to prod me a bit, as I have stalled with the program. Too much going on in the shop right now.

George is a pretty big guy, Bill – he can read this stuff… :) His insights have helped me with some design issues. I believe he will be at the October WIA conference in Cincinnati.

@Bill, It is always good to use dimensions and proportions from pieces that appeal to one’s senses. It means the particular piece has good proportions. In case you have missed it, Bob Lang, Senior Editor at Popular Woodworking, recently started the online SketchUp Shop Class Now In Session. Drew DePenning, also with Popular Woodworking Magazine, did [...]

@hoody, The vision is possibly one of the most important considerations early on; there is no need to rush the conversion from vision to final piece, regardless what others might feel or think. It is *your* project, after all. Now, if it is a spouse, that is a different story… No matter how simple the sketches, [...]

You are talking to a real beginner here. Keep that in mind! I get a “vision” of what I would like to create, and I spend waaaaay too much time on it, developing it in my mind. Then, rudimentory scetches, just to record the measurements, to remind me when I have to cut it. Then [...]

    I wonder if you use:
    1. Paper and pencil
    2. A computer program like SketchUp
    3. Some other computer program?
    4. Do you simply wing it?
    5. How do you arrive at the project’s proportions?

I’m not an expert so take anything I write with a grain. When I’m looking, meaning planning, I tend to get pictures, go anywhere I can see a piece that matches my needs. Then I use Paper & Pencil and keep drawing until I get what I think I want. The general dimensions come from [...]

Mike, You are right – it is interesting why the raised panel set forces the issue for flush panels. That is exactly (I think) the reason that some of the Sommerfeld router bit sets have a back cutter, but I could be wrong, of course. The finish on the headboard is truly outstanding! I love [...]

UC900 freud raised panel shaper set made the raised panel and rail and stiles. The UC210 profile in the set made the raised panel. The panel, when used with 3/4″ stock is proud of the rail and stile by 1/8″. Why the set does not allow for flush panels is beyone me. In order to [...]
