UC900 freud raised panel shaper set made the raised panel and rail and stiles. The UC210 profile in the set made the raised panel.

The panel, when used with 3/4″ stock is proud of the rail and stile by 1/8″. Why the set does not allow for flush panels is beyone me. In order to do this I have to use 5/8″ wood but then you do not get 100% of the UC210 profile as it is made for 3/4″ panels. Only solution is to use a 5/8″ profile raised panle cutter and a back cutter. Kind of defeats the purpose of buying the UC900 set to me.

I will be trying some 5/8 cutters in a Freud RP1000 insert tooling raised panel cutter head and use that with a back cutter. I will post up some results.

The stiles are joined to the bed posts with mortise and tenon joinery. Mortises were cut with a Jet mortiser and tenons were made on the table saw with a dado stack and a couple cuts on the bandsaw.

Capitals (tops of the bed posts) were copied from a design in the book “Beds” by Jeff Miller.

Finish is ML Campbell cinnamon stain hand rubbed applied and top coat is sprayed Magnamax pre cat lacquer.

    Mike,

You are right – it is interesting why the raised panel set forces the issue for flush panels. That is exactly (I think) the reason that some of the Sommerfeld router bit sets have a back cutter, but I could be wrong, of course.

The finish on the headboard is truly outstanding! I love the cinnamon color. That is a dye, correct? I assume so, since it does not appear to have obscured the grain. WONDERFUL does not even start to do it justice!
