Thanks Al, really felt like I was there. Would like more if you were talking and telling stories about “How I got this;” or “This wood was given to me by,” or when you open drawers ” I forgot I had this,” or “Why did I buy that? You have a great shop that is [...]

Al,
Thanks for volunteering with the Red Cross. The flooding is going to be a summer long ordeal and many of the people displaced will not be able to start rebuilding for months. The more people that volunteer the better it will be for everybody.Dave

Hi Al!
I have the exact plane with the Hock blade and chip breaker, but it leaves the mouth too tight. Did you have to file yours in order to take a descent fluffy..?
Nice finger joints!

Wow I’ve been working on this belt grinder on and off for a year…well I’m about to get it finished. I’ll post pictures.

Well it’s been awhile so I’ll brag a bit. Did the Trent Bosch and David Ellsworth class and learned a bunch and really improved my technique and finished product. Tried to take the end of my thumb off while doing something stupid on the lathe, that’s about healed up. Taught a very nice guy from Mo. for 2 Sundays had a great time. Was getting ready for a show next weekend, but now won’t be able to attend as I going up to the Southern States Woodturning Symposium. Should be fun, going as a helper to a vendor. Hope others will start using the Groups again!

Al,
That is beautiful. I love how the sapwood flows through the piece. I’m sure that it will be treasured for years.Dave

Al,
I don’t remember specifically as that was over 10 years ago when we routinely flew out in the area. It was probably 2/3rds of the way across Kansas towards Colorado.Dave

Al,
Interesting photo. There’s a small river out in Kansas I used to fly over quite often that had the bank lined with cars. I doubt that the EPA would approve of using cars for erosion control now. I wonder if that was the intent of the car in your photo?Dave

Good plan! The little bit at the top of the tail board will eventually be blended into the pin board too?
Rob Young commented on the blog post An easy glue-up with great results 1 year, 1 month ago · View
Quick question for you Al. What is the plan for making repairs to the bottom of the cradle should a board become damaged? I see that they are captured in a groove. The shiplap and non-glued status (pinned at the center of each board?) will deal with the expansion and contraction. But having a captured [...]

Al,
I found the Friday night session very enjoyable. It was interesting hearing “The Schwarz’” perspective on the publishing industry and his early years in the business. I wish my work schedule would have allowed me to attend the full weekend.Da ve

Enjoy the quiet cover of snow; well until it turns to muddy slush… we are suffering with 75 deg cloudy weather. Off to the Florida Woodturning Symposium this weekend. Stay Warm!

Next week, Wednesday, Thrusday and Friday I will be driving down to Lakeland, Fl for a class with Trent Bosch on bowls and hollow forms and then in March I will be taking a class from David Ellsworth at the same location. I will post pictures if anyone is interested. I will also try to take copius notes and try to put them in a coherent form for those who like that kind of stuff.

Bill Dalton commented on the blog post Guest article: Need help with finishing a carved bowl 1 year, 6 months ago · View
I think I will try the airbrush, as there should not be much if any bleed through…hopefully. I like the suggestion of sealing the inside of the bowl first – that should also help. I have an old airbrush from my Leather business, but maybe I can convince Patty to let me buy a new [...]

Gramercy also makes a very nice saw vise. I have one and it is the best. I used several of the older saw vise and they work well also. They also have the files you will need if you decide to start doing your own. I also had my favorite dovetail saw redone and sharpened [...]

I’m looking for some suggestions. I’ve started surface carving on some of my bowls and vessels. Took a class from Dixie Biggs, great instructor. Now I’m coming to the hard part the finishing. I have a wild cherry bowl, this is my practice piece, and I carved leaves and it’s about done. The ”back ground” behind the leave is heavily textured and I want to stain or paint it dark so the leave stand out. Question would you use stain or paint. Most of the wood is fairly tight but wild cherry also has the nasty habit of having sections of open tubes, I know not the technical term, that will go through a piece. I’m open to suggestions. I can post a picture if that would help.
