The PBS Series.
Over 30 years ago Roy Underhill started the PBS series The Woodwright’ Shop. When the series launched, I was living and working overseas.
I was very interested in woodworking at the time, but availability of woodworking equipment was literally nil. About one year later a local store started importing contractor table saws, at $1,000 a pop. I ordered one, and waited three months for delivery.
During an early vacation from what turned to be a 22-year long overseas assignment, I caught glimpses of The Woodwright’s Shop during a short hotel stay in a 30,000 mile trip. But there was NO way to watch the show overseas. I used that table saw, getting to know its heart and soul. One year later Sandy and I ordered a shop full of tools, in a shop in Houston; the owner arranged for shipping everything overseas. Long story short: We waited three months for delivery. And so my woodworking started in earnest. Minus The Woodwright’s Shop.
Today.
Turn the page all these years later, and things have changed a bit. Many new woodworkers will have a chance to see Roy Underhill in his show, from early beginnings, to the latest episodes. What a great adventure this will be for newcomers to our hobby. And many memories will flood back to everyone who had a chance to grow in the hobby with the series! Not only that: New seasons will be released in time, to include the entire series.
Congratulations to F&W Media, and to Popular Woodworking magazine for pulling off this feat.
Do you know what’s cool? From initial pricing at $39.99, the 2-DVD set has been reduced to $29.99 – and clicking on the image above or the link below will result in a small commission to Sandal Woods, a nice way to support my woodworking habit.
